Dog Boo Boo’s

Bleeding Nails
Dogs can easily rip off nails from their feet. The stump that is left bleeds heavily, and although the condition isn’t serious it does need treating. With a piece of absorbent material apply pressure to the wound for a
couple of minutes. Alternatively, apply a ’styptic pencil’, a treatment of silver nitrate, to the wound. If the nail is hanging on loosely remove it.

Bites and Cuts
Dogs can pick up cuts, abrasions and bites in all sorts of places. They can scrape themselves in bramble bushes or get bitten by other animals or dogs included.

Bleeding
If you do spot your dog bleeding the key thing is to stop the flow of blood. Place an absorbent pad over the wound and apply pressure so as to control the bleeding. Then wrap the wound in a bandage. If the wound is to the tail, sheath it in something like a bit of tubing or an old syringe case. Then strap the tail to the dog’s side to prevent it shaking the sheath loose when wagging. Visit your local surgery as soon as possible so the vet can apply a proper dressing. They will also advise you on any antiseptics or other treatments you may need to apply.
