Dog Skin Problems

Learn to see signs of potential skin problems on your dog.

No owner is going to recognize all of these potential problems, but by looking out for a few of the telltale signs an owner can generally detect that something is amiss and act promptly. Often the best cure is simply to get the dog to stop scratching, either by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or, if necessary, sedatives.

Hair Loss is the key things to look for here are areas of baldness,on the coat. This can be caused from excessive scratching, diet or hormonal problems. Dietary problems may be treatable at home with  multivitamins dog’s diet. But if in doubt consult the vet.

Excessive Scratching is the most obvious sign of a problem. The first thing to do is to look at the area where the dog is scratching If it is scratching at sores around the base of its tail, the problem may be impacted anal sacs. Look for any parasites, sores or inflamed areas of the skin. Most dogs carry this mite without any problems, but it can cause a nasty dermatitis around the head and shoulders of puppies which, if infected by bacteria, can lead to pyoderma. Dobermans, Daschunds and Irish Setters are particularly prone to this condition. Many parasites can be treated at home with special treatments. However, sores or signs of bacterial infection should be treated by a vet.

Reddening of the Skin  from fleas, lice, ringworm and bacterial sores to different forms of dermatitis. If the irritated area is relatively small, it can be treated by applying calamine lotion.
